Windows XP Service Pack 3 troubles and solutions…

Sure I heard through the grapevine there were some issues with SP3 for XP. I knew there’s a problem with Compaq’s & HP’s with AMD processors rebooting after the install, and there’s a fix for it on their respective websites. It involves rebooting in safe-mode and simply editing the registry to fix the problem. How many average users can edit the registry, let alone boot up in safe mode? So, I’ve been telling my Clients and readers to hold out on installing SP3 since I figured that MS would get it sorted out after a few weeks. NOPE!

I really couldn’t understand what all the problems and issues were. I was a beta-tester for Service Pack 2 and it was a real Godsend! Sure MS didn’t listen to us when we told them to take out the “installation status bar” since it always stalled about halfway thru for about 20 – 30 minutes then … zooom would finish the last half suddenly. Most casual users thought it wasn’t installing properly and would force the shutdown of their systems manually. I managed to make some money due to this issue, since I got many calls from frustrated users needing a service call to get it to “fully install” properly.
