Answers to computer questions!

Firefox has invaded my computer and taken over….

IDW asks: I downloaded Firefox 3 and installed it just as you recommended when I was having problems with Internet Explorer a few weeks ago. I like it very much, but a site I use absolutely requires Internet Explorer (don’t ask me why). Whenever I click the link for this site, it brings up Firefox which won’t work on it properly. I then have to go through a whole rigamarole of steps to get it to work. How can I open it with Internet Explorer?

My reply: There are 2 “quick fixes” you can do here. If you want to go back to using Internet Explorer just click the blue “E” in your start menu. Internet Explorer will open and claim it’s no longer your default browser and offer to reset itself as the default. You could say yes and go back to Internet Explorer exclusively.

Or if you don’t want to reset the default, just right-click (God key) the link you want to open in Internet Explorer and choose “Open With” then choose “Internet Explorer”. Again it will offer to make itself the default but in this case just say no. Now when you open other links they will open in Firefox and you’ll only have to do this procedure when you visit your “special link”. Hope this helps.

How can I enable cookies? This is frustrating me to no end…

Dixie asks: Gord, I keep getting a message saying: “please enable cookies”. It also says for Internet Explorer 6 and higher and Mozilla Firefox 2.0 and higher. Well, I don’t believe I have either of those? I only have Windows XP. Do I need to do something with this??

My reply: Hi Dixie: I’m pretty sure you have the latest Internet Explorer 7. If it’s version 6 the set-up is slightly different. I believe the following workaround should work for either version:

To enable cookies in Internet Explorer 7.x/6.x…
> Click Start and then select your Control Panel in Windows XP.
> Then double-click the “Internet Options” icon.
> Now select the “Privacy” tab.
> Then under “Settings”, click the “Advanced” button.
> No just check the box “Override automatic cookie handling” under the “Cookies” section in the “Advanced Privacy Settings” window.
> Then under “First-party Cookies”, simply select “Accept”.
> Now under “Third-party Cookies”, select “Accept” once again.
> Next, check the box “Always allow session cookies”.
> Then click “OK”.
> Finally, click “OK” once again to exit.

Sure hope this helps – Gord

Follow-up: I followed your instructions Gord, and everything seems to be okay now. Thanks so much. Dixie.

Internet Explorer error frustration!! Need help.

Bill writes: Gord, when shutting the computer down at night I am getting the following message more frequently – almost every time now.

  • “End Program – iexplore.exe. This program is not responding”
And it invites me to “close the program NOW”.

This isn’t serious or urgent, but extremely irritating. Any suggestions? I do my regular maintenance as you taught me. Have a nice weekend. Thanks, Bill.

I replied: Quick and easy fix for this one Bill. My advice is to download Firefox 3!
Get it here >>> http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
It’s safer & faster than Internet Explorer. Best of all you’ll get rid of the Internet Explorer error forever!!! It’s not a perfect solution and we can probably Google the fix for IE, but that will take time and more frustration. This fix is quick and best of all painless. I don’t call IE “Internet Exploder” for nothing!
Hope this helps.
